There's a meme image somewhere out there showing this but game graphics really are just so raisin now. Nothing really stands out so even when developers try to make their games colorful, it doesn't really change anything like in your Mario Kart pic where it's still just a blend of pseudo-realistic vomit where you can't pick out an NPC from a tree. I'm not tech literate at all so I can't even tell you which exact piece of post-processing is responsible for this.

I remember playing first half life, environmental storytelling with 0 hints, clear interface, just go forward, shoot and discover. Valve game design is national treasure actually.

It's for a variety of reasons:
>hides bad LOD assets
>hides bad AA
>makes the world feel more "atmospheric"
>makes the maps feel larger (illusion of distance)

and probably they're mostly using to hide the bad-looking consequences of unoptimized trash game engines like UE5 and hide the nasty effects of the modern alternative to antialiasing of blurring-and-smearing (blurring the image and smearing frames together) and obscuring the worst-looking lowest-res textures that might be just 480p or even only 240p then upsized,

I mean to be fair, camera cannot capture the same visual fidelity like a human's perfect eyesight. Modern graphics try to capture this effect that you usually see in photo and videos. Far away objects look less sharp and less defined.
