i do interface with a computer, the scanners in picrel i plug directly into my laptop and record data with audacity. the usb dongle uses software called sdr++ to tune frequencies and record.
the rabbit ears antenna in the pic is the best way to receive the satellite signals. each pole is 20.5 inches long and spaced apart from each other by 35.5 inches, or 120 degrees. i mount it horizontally on a wooden pole and facing the direction the satellite comes.

is the RTL-SDR even any good? ive been wanting an sdr for years but i dont wana get chinkscammed

 â„–27194[Quote]

>>27178
Its amazing for the price. Only thing better would be the HackRF, but that's around twice the price. Just make sure you don't accidentally buy a fake. They look really close, but are total chinkshit

so that means using amazon is out of the question?

 â„–27235[Quote]

>>27215
the rtl sdr website tells you how to spot fakes i bought mine on amazon and its good. just look at whos selling and what reviews are saying if you go amazon.

ah cool, how much are the real ones (preferably with a link cuz im lazy like that and amazon is slow garbage sometimes) and what software does it need though?

It's a gem. Originally made to pick up TV signals which is why it was mass produced and so cheap.

 â„–27499[Quote]

it arrived, any cool frequencies other than the broadcast band(s)? i cant seem to find anything shortwave (4, 8, and 10 mhz time channels) or AM broadcast (loop antenna required?) and or the weather satilite stuff too, i could see the ones in the ~130 mhz range even indoors

also if you want to get the best results possible from satellites use satdump. you basically just tell it what satellite you want to catch and it will select the frequency for you and decode in real time

oh ok, also have an scad file for a cable spool to keep the cable from becoming a tangly mess

union(){
cube([8, 170, 8]);
translate([30, 0, 0]){
cube([8, 170, 8]);
}
translate([0, 20, 0]){
cube([30, 8, 8]);
translate([0, 120, 0]){
cube([30, 8, 8]);
}
}
}

satdump gave an error about sample rate (SPS) for some reason, and are there any good ones to try and read from that dont use the 1.7GHZ bands? i dont have the LNA or the dish antenna (could a satellite TV dish be modified to work?)

 â„–27637[Quote]

>>27613
noaa 15 18 and 19 transmit apt on 137mhz. very easy to catch with just a v dipole
