So if you read the "i herd u liek mudkipz" copypasta, you actually thought someone was trying to tell you about their retarded classmate at some point. By 2008 though spam had almost completely taken over. It's not that epic for the win nowadays, but to your socially isolated middle school self it was infinitely better than watching reruns of Sabrina the Teenage Witch every day after school.
