The popular image board 4chan was hacked this week, prompting a shutdown.
Apparently the source code for 4chan was leaked on various platforms, including GitHub and Telegram. The group claiming responsibility was a hacker group from a rival image forum known as soyjak.
According to several sources, the website itself hasn’t been updated for nearly a decade after the original creator decided they no longer wanted anything to do with 4chan, making its outdated code far more susceptible to data breaches.
Members of the trans community are rejoicing in the fact that 4chan is no more, as the site has been a source for the many transphobic memes you see reposted on social media.

4chan is known for being a place where people are able to spew the most vile opinions they have with complete anonymity and zero consequences. This comes down to how accounts work on 4chan. Unlike most social media websites, 4chan doesn’t have an account creation system where you have to input an email and password; instead, when you make a post, it assigns you a unique number, though it can still be traced back to your IP address if you are not using a VPN.

In recent years, the website was also weaponized by former members of the Trump administration to indoctrinate people into the beliefs of the far right.
I’m less mournful of 4chan and more upset that the imageboard, as an institution, has just been overrun by the right and turned into the worst version of itself. Maybe in a parallel universe /tttt/ exists as a raisinposting athens where trans women don’t call each other & themselves agp gigahons

People are also making memes about how some trans people have had a 4chan phase growing up.
People also have mixed feelings about this, as some trans people recount stories of how they came to terms with their gender identity and found a sense of community through the image board.
