personally I think Crossed was mildly popular thanks to the readers that eventually got bored of the Walking Dead. Zombies are no longer cool or scary and they found something that ups the horror to 11

like you say, crossed is constantly cranked to 11 so there isn't room for horror proper because there's never anything else
only exception is ennis' issues (there was one other guy who had decently written ones but his name escapes me) since they usually at least try to ease in
