Large swats of the countryside is nice places to visit for vacations, and the food is good. Speaking the language means you can go more enjoyable places.
But outside of that, its not really relevant to anything…. Ask yourself: Are you reading Jules Gabriel Verne's work of fiction in French… or are you reading what is the American translations? Do you read Satre in French, or do you read the academic translation?
The French most like the British has been in a long period where their sphere of influence has shrunk due a lack of understanding what export is. France has not really had major cultural exports since the French new wave of Cinema. I think what has has happened is t hat a lot of the energy has gone into getting a dominant position in the EU project.

Might be selection bias since im very fluent in both, but french and arabic advanced books and the more interesting pieces of litterature from both are usually very hard to translate and conceptualize with other languages
English can be translated to most languages without losing that "spark" the text has, spanish and italian seem like it too(im A1 in both), i would never read Jules Verne in any other language tho no matter how accurate the translation is
