More specifically what's obvious is he based his characters on various "types" of teens one finds in real life in a school: The lonewolf loner type, the eating disordered girl type, the abuse victim type, the lesbian type, the sports obsessed type, the kid who puts others down to feel better type, the super smart kid type. Those basic types were his templates or starting points for the girls, then he worked from there and developed them (not Kaorin so much though). It's quite a simple creative process. Writing in a silly 4koma format wasn't in any way a hindrance for his creativity and ideas nor something that prevented him from touching upon non-silly things like alcoholism and eating disorders and creeps being into little girls, among other things.
